Superbly directed.... Beautiful puppets... Ethereal rock music... "Charcoal Boy" is sure to please.

- Ryan McWilliams, The Village Voice, April 12, 2006

Passion and puppetry strike like the lightning that created the title character in "The Adventures of Charcoal Boy", making this multimedia theatre work a joy to experience. The puppets pop out at you, the video sprouts like weeds, and the music stomps and flows over the whole thing.

The conventions combined with the music and the well-choreographed puppeteers make this one of the best shows I've seen this year.

A level of physical expression that can only be portrayed through puppetry, and it's extremely rewarding to see it done so well.

"The Adventures of Charcoal Boy" is a thoughtful, theatrical puppetry performance that is as stimulating to the ear as it is to the eye. The performance features a live band, a great deal of found art, expert puppetry, and a truly touching title character.

...full of "wow" moments because of the technical wizardry... a story that matches the puppet and set creations for inspiration, "Charcoal Boy" is the one that will draw you in.

The bottom line is that if you're into puppets and have been happily following the art's reinvigoration in the past few years, these shows will confirm your faith in that process...

Nervous Cabaret unfolds the landscape of "Charcoal Boy", howls until you feel the wind in the trees, and carves a cry into the voices of the puppets. This is what is meant by a tour de force. With so many strong elements, "Charcoal Boy" is able to probe its central concern with innocence lost, with the importance of the odd and disposable, with the dangers of home and the road, from a myriad of angles. As the best and final song of the piece begs, "Everything matters."
